Definition of SEO

It is the process of improving the ranking of a website in the search results of a search engine. To make site more visible to the users, a website must have high ranks in the search results of search engines.

Basic steps in Search Engine Optimization

1. Web page should not contain any hidden text.
2. No Splash pages and ignore lots of java script codes in the pages.
3. Add meta tags relevant to the content of the page. Avoid keyword stuffing. It is not a good SEO technique.
4. Avoid use of duplicate or copied content.
5. Empty pages are useless. So add new page having content.
6. Add XML site map for search engines. It will help search engines to crawl all the pages.

There are two important strategies used in Search Engine Optimization :
a) On-Page Optimization
b) Off-Page Optimization

What is On-page Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization techniques that applies to the content and structure of the website that help web pages or website to get high ranking in popular earch engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, Altavista, etc.

On-page optimization includes the following task :
1) URL Structure (Site Structure) : Please note that the url of the website must be related to the context of the website for better rank in search engines.
2) Title Tag : The title of the page display on top of the web browser window. The title tag should be relevant to the content of the page. It should be 60-80 characters contains the keyword phrases.
3) Meta Tag Description : It provides basic description about the page to the users. It should also relevant to the page content. It should be 60 to 180 characters including space, avoid keyword stuffing and explain what is the page about in the meta description.
